Like so many of the Canadian provinces involved in the Provincial Nomination Programme, Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to encourage individuals who have skill in both an occupational capacity and also those who exhibit an entrepreneurial spirit. Thanks to the agreement they have with Canadian Government, the province has certain liberties with regards to the nomination of individuals for permanent residency in Canada.
The main goal of Newfoundland and Labrador is to enhance the economic and social climate of the province. With this in mind, business takes to the forefront of their nomination programme but not without a certain consideration for the cultural diversity of the area. Language ability, in either English or French, is vital to a successful application. It is hoped of course that immigrants will be productive members of society and being able to communicate effectively in a social and business climate is paramount to this hope.
There is a points based system for determining the suitability of an applicant, and one can take this ‘test’ as a self-assessment to ascertain how prudent and application for nomination might be. Points are awarded for meeting certain criteria such as education, work experience and job offers.
