Although the smallest province in Canada, Prince Edward Island is by no means less interested in attracting skilled immigrants to live and work in the area. To be nominated by the Prince Edward Island nomination board, an applicant must have a degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised educational institution.
There are three main programmes under which potential applicants can apply. The skilled workers programme attracts those with specific work skills and the related experience necessary to move into a job immediately. Labour market gaps are often filled this way and critical shortages in recent years have allowed for greater number of skilled immigrants to be nominated.
The Immigrant Entrepreneur programme helps those who have a business plan and wish to set up their own business – or who have a business proposal that might attract local investment and opportunities. The board will judge what plans meet their criteria.
Finally the third programme is the Immigrant Partner programme. For nomination under this programme, an applicant should propose to make an investment in an existing Prince Edward Island company and to also have an active role, be it management or directorship, in that company.
