What you can and can't bring into Canada

Canada Customs regulations govern restricted items being brought into and out of Canada. Some regulations can be very complicated and steps to avoid these complications should be taken if possible.

Duty free permits entry into Canada for up to 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, and 200 grams (about a half-pound) of tobacco, if you are over 18 years old.

Visitors who are 18 or 19, depending on the province, are also allowed about 1.15 litres (40 oz.) of alcohol, 1.5 litres (50 oz.) of wine, or 24 x 355 millilitre (12-oz.) containers of beer or ale.

Visitors bringing their pets into Canada must provide proof of rabies vaccinations from within the last 36 months for all pets over 3 months old. Some exotic pets may not be permitted into Canada.

Meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables and dairy products are heavily restricted and in most cases visitors are not permitted to bring any into Canada.

Visitors are permitted to bring rifles into Canada during hunting season for hunting. Handguns and any automatic weapons are not permitted.

Fishing tackles is allowed into Canada but the visitor must present a non-resident fishing licence for the province or territory the visitors plans to go fishing in.

Attempting to bring any item into Canada which is not permitted is a serious criminal offence.
